In response to the continuously increasing cost pressure in the printing industry, innovative equipment is required to minimize the expensive down-times caused by excessive maintenance or lengthy change-over. Especially in short-run production environments, make-ready time can often be disproportionate to the actual run length. Therefore, electrical format adjustment, digital workflow and remote maintenance are just a few of market-driven features of modern post press systems. Less waste copies, shorter change-over downtimes and more process stability - customers demand for fully automated and efficient solutions which have to be inexpensive at the same time.
With the RS 610 first presented at drupa 2008, RIMA-SYSTEM introduced a horizontal log stacker which almost perfectly fulfills all the demands on modern printing equipment. The log stacker distinguishes itself with innovative log building technology and features multiple options to individually customize the unit to specific production requirements. Perfect ergonomics are guaranteed by easy accessibility and by the designed separation of the machine into an operator and a maintenance side. In addition, the RS 610 impresses with low operating costs and an intelligent press interface which enables communication between the press and the log stacker. A remote maintenance access allows for fast and cost-saving diagnostics and error recovery as well as real-time monitoring and automatic software updates.
Initially developed for A4 format only, the RS 610 log stacker has been continuously optimized. The RS 610 MULTI can now also process printed products in the A5 to A3 format range. The joggers installed in the infeed of the RS 610 MULTI can be electrically adjusted via the touch screen panel of the machine to accurately align the shingled stream. Settings can be saved via the Job Ticket system and can be recalled when needed. The RS 610 gently converts signatures into logs of a length between 600 mm and 1200 mm at a speed of up to 120.000 cph. A stream separator quickly stops the shingled stream behind the last copy of a log to ensure the precise separation of the signatures between this and the following log. The finished log is compressed and strapped, either by a standard strapping unit or by the new Sonixs strapping unit from Mosca. This ultrasonic strapping device can process polyester tapes without any problem and without the use of heat and the associated residue and fumes. The strapped logs of the RS 610 MULTI are directed to the delivery table where they are optimally adjusted by a lift and roller device. So, an exact delivery position is defined to ease the automatic pick-up by the gripper clamp of a connected palletizer. This guarantees the fast and precise palletizing of the logs.
Like the RS 610, the RS 610 MULTI optionally features accurate product separation and automatic log length calculation for optimized application behind ZMR web presses (zero-make-ready). In consideration of current circulation, the accurate production separation allows real-time calculation and flexible building of the required number of logs of same length during running production. Due to this innovative technology, there will be no "odd-length" of the last log. So, expensive overruns or manual handling of logs that under-run the minimal log size are no longer an issue.
Even without the ZMR feature, customers can use another feature to clear the conveying belts as well as the log stacker from surplus copies. With the so-called "rest of log handling" function, all non-processed signatures are converted into a strapped log which can be easily removed either from the strapping area or from the delivery table.
