After working successfully with an RS 600 horizontal log stacker in its plant at Vadum in Denmark for more than two years, Color Print placed an order for three additional RIMA-SYSTEM log stackers to be installed behind a Lithoman IV press in Borlänge in Sweden and an M600 press in Vadum. The latest version of the RS 600 log stacker is very operator-friendly with an ergonomic open design and an easy and quick setup via a touch-screen interface. It guarantees perfect log quality even at very short cycle times and can handle format ranges from delta to A3 with paginations of 4 - 132p.
In addition, Color Print ordered three RS 650 automatic log palletizers which put the delivered logs onto empty pallets for safe transport into the bookbindery.
Baumann Druck in Kulmbach, Germany was looking for innovative web offset technology and selected RIMA-SYSTEM as its provider for reliable post press solutions.
The long-established print plant with about 140 employees has an annual paper usage of about 32.000 tons and focuses strongly on commercials, flyers, catalogs and newspapers in high circulation.
End of April 2008, CEO Monika Uhlemann and CEO Jörg Schild-Müller decided to equip their post press system behind the new Lithoman 40-pages web press with innovative and highly automated machines from RIMA-SYSTEM. In addition to floor and overhead conveyors and an automatic waste ejection system, the installation consists of one RS 840 double stream trimming line and two RS 32 high-speed stackers with direct-coupled RS 110 blocking units and strapping machines. An RS 400 palletizer with its double A4 gripper places the finished stacks of both stacking lines either onto one or onto two pallets. The palletizing robot is also equipped with the latest remote maintenance software to ensure fast and efficient monitoring by off-site RIMA-SYSTEM technicians.
For Baumann Druck the decision to choose RIMA-SYSTEM was an easy one, thanks to the very positive experience of a prior installation. In early 2007 a post press line behind a Zirkon 8-pages web press consisting of one RS 810 and one RS 820 rotary trimmer as well as two RS 32 high-speed stackers was successfully put into operation.
The foundation of the Italian company caused quite a stir in the post press market. Beside congratulations from all over the world, many questions regarding the future of RIMA-SYSTEM and CIVIEMME-SYSTEM were raised. Dr. Christian Tübke and Klaus Kalthoff took some time to answer the frequently asked questions.
Question: Will the manufacturing base in Italy be run for a long-term or will manufacturing be re-located from Italy to Germany or the USA? How many employees were retained from CIVIEMME?
Answer: To maintain the manufacturing base in Bogogno near to Milan was not an easy decision to make. But during negotiations we gradually became acquainted with the local staff and decided to start with an experienced core team and to focus on those products which helped CIVIEMME to capture the global market. In addition, the CIVIEMME-SYSTEM manufacturing facility in Italy is a very important base for Service & Spare Parts and ensures the fast and direct support of all CIVIEMME-customers. This was one important aspect for maintaining Bogogno factory. CIVIEMME-SYSTEM started with a team of 21 local employees to be well-suited for optimal support of new and existing installations. Not at least, it was the qualified personnel who achieved the excellent reputation of CIVIEMME. It is possible that the number of employees will be increased again in the future.
Question: The well-known vertical log stackers are now a part of the CIVIEMME-SYSTEM. What about the rest of the equipment that was provided by CIVIEMME?
Answer: CIVIEMME-SYSTEM will strongly focus on supplying the vertical log stackers, including the corresponding peripheral equipment, i.e. floor and overhead conveyors, log palletizers and robots. Trimming and stacking are presently not in the focus and will still be provided by RIMA-SYSTEM. But CIVIEMME-SYSTEM will be the reliable partner for spare parts for all new and already installed CIVIEMME components.
Question: Will the pressure on the post press market decrease a bit after the merger?
Answer: We expect a permanent cost pressure in the web printing industry in addition to an increasing global concentration of web printers through mergers and acquisitions as well as through purchasing co-operation agreements. In this context and with the knowledge that our customers are equipped with RIMA-SYSTEM and CIVIEMME solutions as well, printers will benefit from the merger by getting comprehensive support from only a single company. The positive feedback we got from our customers and partners corroborates this approach at 100%. We do not know if there will be further mergers in the post press market but we are certain that the foundation stone of any merger will be laid by the customer.
Question: What is RIMA-SYSTEM's position in the post press market?

Answer: RIMA-SYSTEM has successfully faced the demands of the post press market and is surely the most stable medium-sized post press company. We will still continue to offer innovative solutions to increase customer's productivity. With our global sales and service network, reliable technology and qualified personnel we will continue to work hard collaboration with our customers to realize optimal solutions. For ourselves, we think we have done our homework and are well-prepared for future market demands. And we do not want to change from this position in future - being a very stable, reliable and innovative post press partner for customers worldwide.

For more than 20 years CIVIEMME has been the leader in vertical log stacking. Many printers have successfully equipped the backend of their presses with ST 220, ST 280, ST 420 and ST 8000 log stackers. For many years these machines defined the standard in vertical log stacking.
Globalization, very volatile printing markets and the rapidly increasing complexity of post press solutions forced the printing plants to shift towards strong suppliers with a global presence, able to offer complete solutions and local service. In this change CIVIEMME – seen as a specialist for vertical log stackers - has suffered a strong loss of momentum. In the last couple of months the situation became increasingly difficult. On August 1st, 2008 CIVIEMME SPA has eventually terminated its operation.
At the same time RIMA-SYSTEM has successfully evolved to a worldwide solution provider with superior solutions and a reliable local service through its worldwide Project Centers. Today RIMA-SYSTEM is recognized as the technology leader in most post press areas and together with its Project Centers and exclusive dealers RIMA-SYSTEM is committed to further improve its services and solutions for its customers.
We are now very proud to announce that we will be able to offer you
„The Best of Two Worlds – One Partner for CIVIEMME and RIMA-SYSTEM Solutions!“
Starting August 1st, 2008 all RIMA-SYSTEM Project Centers will sell, service & support on a exclusive basis all CIVIEMME vertical log stacking solutions. Having two of the world leading post press technologies under one roof will be a great opportunity for all customers.
This new and exciting situation has become possible by founding CIVIEMME-SYSTEM, a new Italian company which is part of the RIMA-SYSTEM group. The new company exclusively took over a branch of business from CIVIEMME including several employees. The day to day business at CIVIEMME-SYSTEM will be directed by the former and experienced Managers from CIVIEMME who will be supported by Mr. Klaus Kalthoff and Dr. Christian Tuebke as Managing Directors and by Dr. Gunnar Streidt as President. The new CIVIEMME-SYSTEM will generally work through the RIMA-SYSTEM Project Centers in Europe, USA & Canada and Asia which will sell the products from CIVIEMME-SYSTEM on an exclusive basis and grant service and support for this new product line as well as for the many CIVIEMME installations around the world.

A true story of success is RIMA-SYSTEM's Post Press installation behind a format-variable 80-page commercial web press at SEGO in Taverny, France.
The new Compacta 818 web press with a format-variable V5 folder ensures the flexible production of various product formats both long grain and short grain paper. To take benefit from all possible production options, the Post Press system has to be flexibly configurable and has to process diverse production formats very fast and stable.
The complete Post Press system was installed by RIMA-SYSTEM and consists of floor and overhead conveyors, one RS 840 double stream trimming line, two RS 36 stackers with direct-coupled RS 110 blocking units, two RS 600 log stackers as well as one RS 400 palletizing cell with two robot arms. The intelligent installation ensures the fast, flexible and efficient palletizing of stacks and logs in consideration of the limited space of the production rooms. During the step-by-step installation of the finishing line, the flexible configuration allowed to produce on single sections while still setting-up the remaining sections.
Thanks to the reliable and efficient production with flexible formats, the high degree auf automation and the fast set-up, RIMA-SYSTEM was also mandated by SEGO to optimize two existing Post Press lines.
Increasing run lengths with decreasing delivery window is a trend that has already established itself in printing industry. Therefore, a fast and efficient Post Press system is critical to deliver the finished product on time. Despite mass distribution and deadline pressure, the finishing of printed material is still often characterized by labor-intensive manual processes that clearly underperform automated solutions. Palletizing in particular frequently remains a manual process which cannot keep up with the speed of prior production processes. In addition, the quality of manually built pallets is negatively influenced by time pressure.
RIMA-SYSTEM, with an expertise in providing automated Post Press solutions, meets the demands of decreasing cycle times and is proud to present the RS 500, a new robotic palletizer with up to 2000 cycles per hour.* The RS 500 is based on the proven Fanuc four-axis-robot (as is the industry-tested RIMA-SYSTEM RS 400). The four-axis-robot features RIMA-SYSTEM's reliable gripper technology and low operating costs. The RS 500 robotic palletizer picks up loose or strapped bundles from an accumulation conveyor and puts them smoothly and accurately onto the pallet according to customer specified packing patterns. In contrast to the RS 400, not only one or two bundles but a complete row of bundles is picked up and put onto the pallet with each cycle. Therefore, a row of multiple bundles is built on an accumulation conveyor and is then picked up by the gripper and placed onto the top layer of the pallet. During the pick-up process, another row of bundles is built on a second accumulation conveyor which is set at a right angle to the first accumulation conveyor. The delivered bundles can be rotated at 90° on a reversing station to ensure that the bundles are picked up in the proper orientation. In addition, the reversing station enables the building of mixed rows by reversing single bundles to optimize packing patterns and to stabilize the pallet. Thanks to palletizing with two accumulation conveyors, more bundles can be processed and up to 2000 cycles per hour can be reached.* Like the RS 400, the RS 500 can be equipped with an automated slip sheet feeder and an automated pallet dispenser. For optional log palletizing, the gripper of the robot arm can be changed in minutes. The RS 500 is operated via a touch screen panel and PALETTI, the graphical, user-friendly control interface.
Thanks to RIMA-SYSTEM's innovative palletizing technology, a much higher number of cycles can be realized to meet the growing demands of prior production processes. So, palletizing will not become the bottleneck of modern Post Press production. Due to proven technology and an intelligent software solution, pallets can now be built precisely and safely even at the highest speeds.
* depending on products
Cost-effectiveness, flexibility and intuitive operation are the demands on modern log palletizers. Therefore, future-oriented printing plants ask for fully automated palletizing solutions to replace the time and cost intensive semi-automated palletizing. Because of decreasing cycle times, the finished logs have to be placed quickly but still safely and precisely onto the pallets. Flexibility regarding packing patterns and an intuitive operator interface is as important as an easily accessible palletizing area.
RIMA-SYSTEM presents the new RS 655 palletizer which is specially designed for installation behind the RS 610 log stacker. The compact but open design is one of the outstanding features. Instead of a mounted iron grid, the palletizing area is secured by safety light barriers. This allows for a better visual monitoring of the palletizing process, consumes less space and simplifies the pick-up of full pallets. Furthermore, the RS 655 with its new vertical axis technology is well-suited for operation in production rooms with low ceilings. The gripper runs between two permanently mounted slide rails, so that no machine parts move beyond the upper outline of the palletizer. The RS 655 is operated via an intuitive operator panel.
The RS 655 can be upgraded with specific options, which include
Thanks to innovative technology, space-saving construction and additional options, the RS 655 will set new standards and is the first choice for efficient and reliable log palletizing.

Due to the increasing degree of automation and standardization of production processes, the digitalization of printing processes – and of Post press solutions as well – comes to the forefront. The cross linking of machines and data processing generates information and parameter settings which has to be transported, saved, read and executed. The handling of data, which allow monitoring, configuration and change-over of machines, has to be a cost-efficient and centralized process without any risk of data loss. Thanks to open data formats like JDF (Job Definition Format) it is possible to merge all management and production data and to save order related information. The stored data can be exchanged between different computerized systems and the connected machines. During the whole production process, from Prepress to Printing to Post Press and the connected ERP-system, all data and information flows can be digitalized, administered and manipulated.
RIMA-SYSTEM takes up the challenge of digital workflow by implementation of the so called Job Ticket, which is based on the CIP4-Standard and contains all relevant production data. The Job Ticket allows the administration of all setting data of a given production and the transmission of this data to the machines. It also enables the transmission of feedback signals from the machines regarding status information, quantities and processing time. The upload and download of data enables a motor-driven presetting of machines and therewith the automatic adjustment of the whole Post Press system depending on actual production. This reduces the time- and cost-intensive manual adjustment and monitoring of equipment. The Job Ticket is administered by the PPMS (Post Press Management System) which represents the gateway between ERP and machines. PPMS can be described as a data controller which allows monitoring and visualization of production processes. In addition, remote maintenance, real-time monitoring, fast problem solution and software-updates via modem/ISDN/DSL are also guaranteed through the application of state-of-the-art electronic modules.
The implementation of digital workflow in printing plants enables an extensive controlling of production processes, a fast information exchange and the individual configuration of the whole Post Press system depending on actual production. In comparison to conventional solutions and thanks to advantages in controlling, analysis and documentation, the digital Post Press System from RIMA-SYSTEM will give future-oriented printers a competitive edge.

Every day, millions of products pass through trimming lines for single, two, or three-side-trimming. In modern trimming applications a precise cut is as important as low operating costs. Just as critical is a fast and easy adjustment of the trimmers to avoid expensive set-up times, especially in case of frequently changing formats and other production requirements.
RIMA-SYSTEM is proud to present the new RS 831, an innovative „all-in-one“ rotary trimming line based on the proven technology of the RS 830 and which is designed to fulfill all demands on modern trimmers. Two trimming units and a bumpturn are mounted on a stable, movable rack for flexible operation behind diverse delivery scenarios. The complete encapsulation of the trimming units ensures a more quiet operation. Proven features like infeeds with “Hexbrator Technology”, “Multi-Knife-Technology”, integrated knife cooling and “Zero Gap Adjustment” guarantee a precise cut, a perfect run-out and a long edge life. The RS 831 can be delivered as a trimming line with manual adjustment or as an automated solution with electrical adjustment and a digital workflow interface. In the second case, the RS 831 will be operated via a graphical display at the machine or centrally via digital data format (e.g. Job Ticket).
The automated adjustment of complete Post Press systems lowers change-over expenses, reproduces setting data of periodic orders and documents status information like quantities and times of current and finished production. For future-oriented printing plants with alternating production, the RS 831 with an optionally electrical format adjustment is the perfect solution for reliable and cost-effective trimming.
Stacking is a central and important process of Post Press systems. The stackers deliver loose stacks to the palletizing area or to other subsequent production processes. But unstrapped stacks of slippery products may deteriorate and cause problems downstream. Blocking units avoid this risk of malfunction by compressing and electrostatically charging the stacks, keeping them secure without strapping. So, blocking units help to increase the process stability and therewith the efficiency of the complete Post Press system.
With the new RS 120, RIMA-SYSTEM presents a blocking unit which is based on proven technology in combination with innovative features. The new blocking unit is specially designed for A4 format and has shorter cycle times in comparison to the RS 110. Instead of 3 seconds per cycle, the RS 120 compresses, electrostatically charges and ejects stacks in about 2 seconds.* These shorter cycle times ensure that the RS 120 is ready for high speed and high production environments. The faster throughput results mainly from the compact construction and the specialization on A4 format. The infeed was shortened which also results in less required space in the production rooms. In addition, the length of the guard was shortened and partially replaced by a light barrier.
The RS 120 should be combined with RS 32 and RS 36 high speed stackers from RIMA-SYSTEM to take advantage of the outstanding performance. The innovative technology and the space-saving construction ensure a maximum process stability and efficiency. Thanks to state-of-the-art electronic modules, the RS 120 is ready for digital workflow and is well-suited for future production demands.
*depending on products
Increasing production expenses due to increasing operating costs and cost-intensive downtimes are well-known in printing industry. Often, the length of downtimes disproportionate with the time of production, especially in the case of small productions like in bookbindery. So, printers and bookbinders are looking for solutions to counteract the expenses caused by change-over downtimes. Zero-Make-Ready (ZMR) rotations have the advantage, that no cost-intensive change-over downtime is needed. The change of printing plates happens during the current production without stopping the web press. But this advantage can only be realized, if the Post Press system is also able to fulfill the demands of ZMR-rotations.
With the new RS 610, RIMA-SYSTEM successfully introduced a ZMR-optimized log stacker which features with accurate product separation and automated log calculation. So, the RS 610 especially convinces with an innovative log building technology. In consideration of current circulation, the accurate production separation allows real-time calculation and flexible building of the required amount of logs of same length during the running production. Due to this innovative technology, there will be no deviant length of the last log. So, cost-intensive overproduction or manual treatment of logs that under-run the minimal log size will no longer exist.
The RS 610 bases on the proven technology of the RS 600 but is specially designed for A4 format. Established advantages like optimized ergonomics and low operating expenses were adopted from the RS 600. An intelligent press interface enables the communication between web press and log stacker. Thanks to a remote access, the RS 610 is ready for remote diagnostics and maintenance as well as regular software-updates. To achieve maximum performance, the RS 610 should be combined with the RS 400 palletizing robot or the RS 655 log palletizer.
Two month before DRUPA 2008, RIMA-SYSTEM invited friends, dealers and partners to an open house to discuss current and future trends of Post Press. During two days, two visits at printers demonstrated the successful installation of innovative solutions and allowed the discussion with a satisfied customer. The visits left the impression how an optimized Post Press system can be realized and how the right equipment with a high degree of automation ensures a high quality production.
“Raise the curtain” was the motto at the RIMA-SYSTEM factory tour, where the participants had the chance to have an exclusive look at the newest products. Besides the already successfully installed RS 610 log stacker, the new RS 120 high-speed blocking unit and the new RS 831 rotary trimming line with electric format adjustment were presented. The RS 120 is a space-saving alternative for the RS 110 and is specially designed for A4 format. The RS 831 rotary trimming line has a new design and allows implementation of digital workflow due to the optionally electric format adjustment. Both innovations will be shown at the RIMA-SYSTEM stand at DRUPA (stand D45, hall 14).
Another hot discussed topic was the implementation of digital workflow in Post Press systems and the presentation of RIMA-SYSTEM’s software solution. The Post Press Management System (PPMS) - Software is the gateway between ERP and machines and ensures the controlling of production processes, fast information exchange and adjustment regarding current production. The PPMS software is a future-oriented solution for printers who use controlling, analysis and documentation advantages for an efficient and successful post press production.
All open house attendants were satisfied and enthusiastic about the shown solutions and are looking forward to DRUPA 2008. There, more innovative solutions from RIMA-SYSTEM will be shown and will be integrated in a fully operational Post Press line.
After testing compensating stackers from different suppliers, Thijsen Rotatie decided for an RS 3210 compensating stacker from RIMA-SYSTEM.
The installed M3000 press is able to produce up to 120.000 cph on one stream but the RIMA-SYSTEM stacker is suited for the task of producing perfect bundles even at this high speed.
Technical Director Walter Thijsen is happy with his decision: “Everybody is enthusiastic about the performance. Even the most critical of my printers are fully satisfied. The RS 3210 is literally running on its own with great results!”
After seeing the machine in production in Germany the Brazilian printer Casa Publicadora has decided for an RS 3210 compensating stacker from RIMA-SYSTEM. The high-speed machine will be installed behind a Zirkon 6611 press in Sao Paulo. It will process bibles and flyers at a speed of up to 50.000cph. A special challenge is the difficult paper (around 28gsm) of the 8-32p products.
The RS 3210 however with its three-stage upper bin and the intelligent servo-pusher system is up to the challenge – even with difficult products and at a high speed the stack quality is superior.
According to our maxim "We are at home in the world" we realised together with our customers within the past months several Post Press solutions in Italy. From north to south, from the Alps to the land between Adriatic Sea and Mediterranean - as a complete solution provider we are speaking the same language.
Complete Solution at D`Auria Printing, Italy
The installation at D`Auria Printing S.p.a. in Itay (region Abruzzen) behind the KBA Compacta 215 press (16 pages @ 50 000 cph) consists of floor conveyors, an RS 600 horizontal log stacker with direct connected RS 650 log palletizer, an RS 830 „all-in-one" trimming line and an RS 32 high-end compensating stacker. Untrimmed productions are transported directly to the RS 600 horizontal log stacker, which processes the shingled stream into logs with an length up to 1200 mm. The direct connected RS 650 log palletizer picks up the logs from the roller delivery, can turn them 90°, 180° or 270° and places them safely on the pallet – ready for transport. Easy operation, high reliability and superior log quality of RS 600 and RS 650 increase productivity and efficiency. For three-side trim trimmed productions underpass the infeed of the log stacker and run to the RS 830 rotary trimming line. Within the RS 32 stacker the precise trimmed shingled stream is processed into stable stacks. Finally the stacks are palletized manually onto the pallet.
Easy access, backup options and a high degree of automation ensure an efficient and easy to operate Post Press system.

The RIMA-SYSTEM Post Press equipment consists of a flat belt conveying system, an RS 830 rotary trimming line and an RS 3617 indexing compensating stacker. The trimmer and stacker are both equipped with special newspaper options like non-marking belts to guarantee a perfect product quality at very high speeds. Untrimmed products can bypass the trimming line to go directly into the high-speed stacker. Equipped with stream aligners, an automatic divert gate and double squeeze rollers in the infeed it offers high quality stacks which are ejected safely via its intelligent servo-pusher system.
The system was optimized for a quick set-up and easy adjustment on the run to work with a multitude of different productions.
Flexible solution for Caleidograf
Merate is the hometown of Caleidograf S.r.l, which uses an M300 press for commercial print jobs. The folder configuration of their press allows a very flexible product portfolio and thus required a Post Press system that could handle the multiple possibilities of product alignments. The final layout consisted of a conveying system, two RS 800 rotary trimmers and two RS 32 high-end stackers can handle all productions of the two folders. The bumpturn in the configuration allows the shingled stream to run left or right hand. In combination with a special product inverter this makes sure that all products enter the compensating stacker spine leading. The bumpturn can even be passed straight through for certain productions. The configuration can be expanded with automatic palletizer and allows the connection of a log stacker.
